Emma loved open-mic night. The attention, the laughter, the excitement. Brew Babies, the local pub, was full of warm bodies, and it was another perfect opportunity for her and Luke to become members of the community.

Last week she’d been nervous about seeing him after his time back home. Would he be the same man she’d come to adore in Blueberry Springs, or would he have reverted back to the Luke she’d grown up with? Entitled and throwing his money around instead of being real?

Then he’d breezed in, right on schedule, that intense look in his eyes as though he was ready to devour her. The urge to throw herself into his arms and lose herself had been tremendous. And then she’d seen the bag from the high-end boutique and her heart had nearly stopped in disappointment.

Inside had been a slinky red dress. Sexy shoes.

She couldn’t help but think that Luke saw her as a mistress to dress up and keep happy. Someone he needed to ply with gifts instead of true affection. She didn’t want to be the pretty showpiece. She wanted to be the friend, the lover, the partner and confidante, the woman he found beautiful even without makeup, or wearing the right things.

So she’d kept their reunion about business and politely put on the dress and heels for open-mic night.

“Be nice, approachable, real, friendly,” Luke said, repeating her earlier instructions. “Don’t throw my money around. Win over the town. Be one of them.”

Emma nodded. He’d dressed down in jeans and a button-up shirt, the sleeves rolled up to showcase his muscular forearms, and he was simply irresistible. She wanted to drag him into the hallway that led past the washrooms and into the alley behind the pub, and kiss him senseless.

“Emma?” he prompted.

“Yes?” She felt teary-eyed.

“Are you all right?”

“I’m fine. I think we should…” She turned to him, the words dying as he gave her a smoldering gaze that trailed down her dress. It fit her form beautifully and he’d even brought the right shoes to make her legs look extra sexy. But he was dressing her, and it felt like a controlling move. If this was the start, where would it end? She’d already been through the heartache of this kind of relationship with Vaughn. She didn’t have it in her to do it again with Luke.

She smoothed his shirt, her hand lingering. “Just…be good tonight.”

He gave her a crooked smile, oozing sex appeal and hunger. She met his eyes, that helpless feeling she got around him taking over. It would be so easy to lose herself in the fire that burned between them.

She dropped her hand and turned toward the stage at the back of the bar.

She needed to stay focused. She’d seen what the environmental protesters had done last summer when they’d decided they didn’t like Carrington being in town. In the end, it had actually been a rival of Devon’s stirring everything up for them, but the lesson was there. Be a part of the community.
